Where to Stay on Santiago Island: Praia or Tarrafal?
- Share
Hi, we're planning to spend about a week on Santiago Island before heading to Santo Antão. During that week, we'd like to take a short trip to either Fogo or Maio. Do you think it makes sense to stay 4 nights around Praia and 3 nights around Tarrafal? Or, if we stay near Praia, is it easy to explore the whole island with a 4x4?
You can stay in Praia and explore Santiago from there, especially if you have a car. However, keep in mind that reaching the northern part of the island, such as Tarrafal, takes about 1.5 hours by road.

My recommendation: Start your trip with a few nights in Tarrafal. It's home to the most beautiful beach on Santiago and a great base to explore the north, including Ribeira da Prata, Principal, and the Serra Malagueta Natural Park. It also gives you time to enjoy the peaceful vibe of the town.
Then, finish your stay in Praia. You'll be close to the airport or ferry for your next destination, and you can visit the capital and explore Cidade Velha.
So yes, staying only in Praia is doable, but you'll spend a lot of time driving back and forth. And Tarrafal is definitely worth the trip, especially if you love beaches and nature.
